‘“Checkmate!”’

One of Moorcock’s first fantasy stories — those of Sojan the Swordsman, which appeared in Tarzan Adventures in 1957/’58 — ‘“Checkmate!”’ concluded a three-part adventure (later) known collectively as “Sojan, Swordsman Of Zylor”.
